I Miss You Mama!

Somewhere in Heaven my Mother is smiling down at me.

Oh, that none of us would ever have to face that dreaded event of death! To be saved from ever having to face such a great loss would be wonderful.

Sometimes it is an acquaintance or neighbor. Sometimes it is someone much closer to us. The sting is painful regardless.

However, losing our mothers is one of the most painful experiences we will ever face, and sadly, it’s a reality to many of us already.

Several scriptures bring to remembrance the attributes our mothers exemplified throughout our lives. Proverbs 14:1 talks about her: “The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down.”

How often have we heard our mothers speak words of encouragement, coaxing us to do better? Can we remember their words of affirmation that built our self-esteem and confidence? How many lessons did they teach us about living productive lives, showing us how to be good, contributing members of society? Even when we didn’t realize it, their daily lives showed us how to care, how to nurture, how to motivate, how to work hard and so much more!

Even 1 Peter 4:8 reminds us of these precious women: “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” Our mothers were never in a hurry to broadcast our faults to the world. They were our protectors that didn’t overlook what we had done wrong but took the opportunity to help us learn. Their tender hearts kept in mind that we were young and would make mistakes. They loved us unconditionally and their goal was to shape us into being our best version of ourselves.

Proverbs 31:28-29 sums up this amazing woman in our lives as well: “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”

Having been blessed with a good mother is one of the greatest privileges this life could ever afford us. It isn’t money, material or popularity. Those things are temporal and offer no guarantees. They may aid our lives in some ways but will never replace all that our mothers have done for us internally. Their dedication to raising us in environments filled with their love reaches beyond our childhood days. They further reach into the lives of our children and their children. Our mothers set the example and started our families’ inheritances of love in motion.

It is no wonder that we feel such a deep void when our mothers are no longer walking among us. The ache of losing these precious ladies is tangible. God understood that it would be this way and offered us comfort from His Word. Matthew 5:4 tells us that, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Additionally, Revelation 21:4 encourages us with the reminder that “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

The Lord knew we would hurt in many ways, including the loss of our mothers on Earth. His Spirit is our Comforter until death is no more.

Let us remember to be thankful for His comfort, and thankful for our mothers!
